What is a ductless mini split, and when does it fit?
A ductless mini split is a heat pump without ducts. An outdoor unit connects to one or more indoor heads on a wall, in the ceiling or near the floor through a small refrigerant line set, power and a drain line that pass through a small hole in the wall. Each head cools in summer and heats in winter, and each room is set on its own. It is the right fit when:
- The space has no ducts: an ADU, a garage conversion, a guest house, a room addition or a converted attic.
- The ducts never reached a room, or one room stays hot no matter what the central system does.
- The home heats with wall heaters and has no room for ductwork.
- You want to stop cooling the whole house to keep one room comfortable, such as a home office or a bedroom.
If the house already has sound ducts and you are replacing a furnace and AC together, a ducted system is usually simpler; see heat pump installation and AC installation.

Single-zone or multi-zone?
| Single-zone | Multi-zone | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | One outdoor unit, one indoor head | One outdoor unit, two or more indoor heads |
| Best for | One room, an ADU studio, a garage conversion | Several rooms or a whole small home without ducts |
| Control | One room, one setting | Each head set on its own |
| Watch for | Sizing the head to the room, not the house | Total capacity of the outdoor unit and the route of each line set |
A head that is too big for its room cools in short bursts and leaves the air damp, so every head is sized from the room's own load: its size, windows, sun exposure and insulation.
Ductless mini split or central air?
Central air moves cooled air through ducts to the whole house from one system; it suits homes that already have ducts in good condition. A mini split puts the cooling and heating in each room, so there are no attic ducts to lose cooling on the way, which matters in hot San Fernando Valley attics. The trade-off is a visible indoor head in each room and a line set route on the outside wall. Many homes use both: central air for the main house and a mini split for an addition or ADU.

How is a mini split installed?
- Planning. Each room is measured, the head type and location chosen, and the line set route and outdoor unit spot planned.
- Indoor heads. Mounting plates set level, a small opening through the wall for the line set, power and drain.
- Outdoor unit. Set on a pad or wall brackets with clearance for airflow, and wired to its own disconnect.
- Line sets. Refrigerant lines run, insulated and covered; the system is pressure tested and put under vacuum before the refrigerant is released.
- Start-up. Each head tested in cooling and heating mode, the drain checked, and the remote and filter cleaning are explained.
Like any heat pump, a new mini split usually needs a permit.

What affects the cost of a ductless mini split installation?
The number of indoor heads and their type (wall, ceiling cassette or floor), the capacity of each zone, the length and route of the line sets, whether a new electrical circuit or a panel upgrade is needed, and the permit. A single head for one room is a smaller job than a multi-zone system with several heads and long line sets, and a wall head is usually simpler to place than a ceiling cassette. Our pricing is up front, with no hidden fees, and the quote is free; the same drivers for ducted systems are explained in our heat pump installation cost guide.

Ductless mini split questions
Can a mini split heat as well as cool?
Yes. Mini splits are heat pumps, so each head heats in winter and cools in summer.
How many heads do I need?
Usually one per room or open area you want to control. A large open space may need a bigger head rather than two; each head is sized to its room.
Do you repair mini splits too?
Yes. We repair all makes and models of air conditioning systems, including ductless mini splits; see heat pump repair.
How do I keep a mini split running well?
Rinse the washable filters in each head every month or two in heavy use, keep the outdoor unit clear of plants and debris, and have the coils and drain cleaned once a year.
