Insulation types and R-values
| Type | How it is installed | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Blown-in fiberglass | Blown loose over the ceiling to an even depth | Fills around wiring and framing; does not settle much |
| Blown-in cellulose | Blown loose, made from treated recycled paper | Dense, good at slowing air movement; settles over time |
| Fiberglass batts | Rolls laid between ceiling joists | Works when cut tight around obstacles; gaps cut its value |
R-value measures resistance to heat flow: higher is better. For climate zone 3, which includes Los Angeles, ENERGY STAR recommends bringing an uninsulated attic floor to R-49, or adding R-38 where 3 to 4 inches of insulation are already there (ENERGY STAR).
Removing old insulation
Insulation that is compressed, wet, contaminated by rodents or full of debris from old roof work does little and can affect air quality (see indoor air quality). We remove it, seal the gaps around lights, pipes and the attic hatch where hot attic air leaks into the house, then install new insulation to the target depth.

Insulation plus a radiant barrier
Insulation slows heat moving through the ceiling; a radiant barrier under the roof deck reflects the sun's heat before it reaches the attic floor. In hot Valley attics the two work together, and both protect attic ductwork. If your ducts are old too, see air duct replacement.
What affects attic insulation cost?
Attic size, the target R-value, the insulation type, whether old insulation must be removed, air sealing, and attic access. Our pricing is up front, with no hidden fees, and the quote is free. If the air conditioner itself is near the end of its life, see AC installation.

Attic insulation questions
How do I know if my attic needs more insulation?
If you can see the tops of the ceiling joists, there is not enough. Hot upstairs rooms and a long-running AC are other signs.
Can new insulation go over the old?
Yes, when the old insulation is dry and clean. Wet, moldy or rodent-damaged insulation is removed first.
Will insulation lower my cooling bills?
It reduces the heat the AC has to remove, which shortens run times; how much you save depends on what is in the attic today.
