Which heating system fits your Los Angeles home?
| System | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Gas furnace | Homes with ducts and a gas line that want to keep a separate AC | Strong heat; needs venting and a gas supply. See furnace installation. |
| Heat pump (ducted) | Homes with ducts replacing both furnace and AC | One electric system for heating and cooling; suits mild Valley winters. See heat pump installation. |
| Ductless mini split | No ducts, additions, ADUs, rooms with wall heaters | Room-by-room control, no duct losses; one indoor head per zone. |
Sizing a heating system: why the load calculation matters
A heating system is sized from the home's heat loss: walls, attic insulation, windows, air leaks and the coldest nights expected where you live. An oversized furnace short-cycles and wears out; an undersized heat pump leans on backup heat. Leaky or undersized ducts undo a good sizing job; see air duct replacement, and if the old system only needs a fix, heating repair. The load calculation (ACCA Manual J) settles it before any equipment is chosen.
Permits, code and efficiency rules
Replacing a furnace or heat pump usually needs a permit and an inspection. California's Title 24 energy code sets efficiency and duct requirements for replacements (California Energy Commission), and a gas furnace installed in the South Coast air district has to meet the district's nitrogen oxide emission limits (South Coast AQMD Rule 1111).

What happens on installation day?
- The old equipment is disconnected and removed; gas and electrical lines are made safe.
- The new furnace, air handler or heat pump is set, connected to ducts, gas, venting and power.
- The thermostat is wired for the new system; heat pumps get their outdoor unit and refrigerant lines.
- We fire the system, check temperature rise, gas pressure, venting and airflow, then walk you through it.

Rebates on new heating systems
Utility and state programs in California offer incentives on qualifying heat pumps and high-efficiency equipment, and the rules change often. Programs differ from one utility to the next, so ask about them at your free quote.

What customers say about their new heating systems
"I recently had Elvira Ocean & Air install a new heating system in my home, and I couldn't be happier with the results."
"The installation team was professional and efficient, ensuring that everything was installed correctly."
"They completed the installation of my heating system in no time, and it has been keeping my home cozy ever since."
Heating installation questions
Should I replace my furnace and AC at the same time?
If both are old, usually yes: the furnace blower and the AC coil work as a matched system,. A heat pump replaces both with one system.
Can I replace a wall heater with central heat?
Yes, if there is room for ducts; otherwise a ductless heat pump gives heat and cooling room by room.
