## When should you replace your air conditioner instead of repairing it?

Replacement starts to make sense when the repair bill is a large share of what a new system costs, when the same unit keeps failing, or when the system is old enough that parts and refrigerant get harder to find. A repair is usually the better buy on a younger system with one failed part. We tell you which side of that line your unit is on before you decide; if a repair will carry it, that is what we quote. Not sure yet? Start with an [AC repair diagnosis](https://elviraoceanair.com/ac-repair-ca/).

Signs that point toward a new system:

- The compressor or the outdoor coil has failed on an older unit.
- The system uses R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer produced in the US, so every leak gets more expensive to recharge.
- Rooms stay hot on summer afternoons even after a tune-up, or the unit runs for hours without reaching the set temperature.
- Summer electric bills keep climbing although your use has not changed.
- You are adding rooms, finishing a garage or converting space that the old system was never sized for.

## Central AC, heat pump or ductless: which system fits your home?

The right equipment depends on the ducts you already have and how you heat the house. Here is how the three options compare for a Los Angeles home:

| System | Best fit | What to know |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Central air conditioner** | Homes with working ductwork and a gas furnace you want to keep | Cools only; the furnace keeps heating. The indoor coil sits on top of the furnace and must match the new outdoor unit. |
| **Heat pump** | Homes with ductwork that want one electric system for cooling and heating | Replaces both the AC and the furnace's heating role. Mild Valley winters suit heat pumps well. See [heat pump installation](https://elviraoceanair.com/heat-pump-installation-ca/). |
| **Ductless mini split** | Homes without ducts, additions, garage conversions, single hot rooms | Each indoor head cools and heats its own room; no duct losses. Good for rooms the central system never reached. |

## How is a new AC sized, and what do SEER2 ratings mean?

A system is sized with a load calculation (the industry method is ACCA Manual J), which looks at the square footage, ceiling height, insulation, windows and the direction they face, attic heat and how many people live in the house. An oversized unit cools the air fast but shuts off before it removes humidity and wears out from short cycling; an undersized one runs all afternoon and still loses the fight on a hot Valley day. Copying the tonnage from the old unit repeats any mistake the last installer made.

### SEER2 and EER2 in plain words

SEER2 measures cooling output per unit of electricity over a season; EER2 measures it at peak heat. Since January 1, 2023, new split central air conditioners installed in California must meet the federal Southwest-region minimums, 14.3 SEER2 for most home-size systems plus an EER2 minimum ([federal standard, 10 CFR 430.32](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-10/chapter-II/subchapter-D/part-430/subpart-C/section-430.32)). A higher rating costs more up front and saves more on the electric bill, so it pays back sooner in the hottest parts of the Valley.

### Ductwork decides how well the new unit works

A new outdoor unit pushes air through the same ducts as the old one. Leaky, crushed or undersized ducts waste the efficiency you paid for, which is why we check them during the quote. California's energy code (Title 24) can require duct sealing and testing when the outdoor unit or coil is replaced ([California Energy Commission](https://www.energy.ca.gov/programs-and-topics/programs/building-energy-efficiency-standards)). If your ducts are past saving, see [air duct replacement](https://elviraoceanair.com/air-duct-replacement-ca/).

## What happens on installation day?

1. **Protect and remove.** Floors and walkways are covered, the refrigerant in the old system is recovered, and the old outdoor unit and coil come out.
2. **Set the new equipment.** The outdoor unit goes on a level pad, the matched coil is installed at the furnace or air handler, and the refrigerant lines are replaced or cleaned as the new system requires.
3. **Electrical and controls.** The disconnect, wiring and thermostat are connected for the new system.
4. **Vacuum, charge and test.** The lines are pulled into a deep vacuum, the system is charged to the manufacturer's specification, and airflow and temperatures are checked at the vents.
5. **Walk-through.** You see how to run the thermostat and change the filter, and what maintenance the warranty asks for.

### Permits and the new refrigerants

Replacing a central air conditioner normally requires a mechanical permit from your city's building department, followed by an inspection of the finished install. Starting in 2025, new systems use lower-impact refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32 instead of R-410A, because of the federal phasedown under the AIM Act ([US EPA](https://www.epa.gov/climate-hfcs-reduction/technology-transitions-hfc-restrictions-sector)), so the new outdoor unit and the indoor coil have to be replaced together.

## What affects the cost of AC installation in Los Angeles?

Our pricing is up front, with no hidden fees. The price moves with these factors:

- **System type and size:** tonnage from the load calculation, central AC versus heat pump versus ductless.
- **Efficiency:** higher SEER2 equipment costs more and saves more each summer.
- **Ductwork:** sealing, repairs or [new ducts](https://elviraoceanair.com/air-duct-replacement-ca/) when the old ones leak.
- **Electrical work:** a new disconnect or circuit when the old one does not meet the new unit's requirements.
- **Access:** attic or crawl space work, roof-mounted or hard-to-reach locations.
- **Permit and testing:** the permit and any duct testing your city requires.

Rebates can lower the cost: ask during the quote which utility or state rebates your new system qualifies for.

## AC installation questions

How long does an AC installation take?A straight replacement of a central air conditioner, outdoor unit and matched coil, is often finished in a day; customers describe full change-outs done in one day. Adding ductwork, a new electrical circuit or a system in a house that never had central air takes longer; the quote states the schedule for your job. Can you install a new AC on my existing ducts?Often, yes. We check the ducts for leaks, damage and size during the quote. Sound ducts are sealed and reused; ducts that are crushed, disconnected or far too small are repaired or replaced, because they decide how well the new unit cools. Do I need to replace the indoor coil with the outdoor unit?Yes. The outdoor unit and indoor coil are rated as a matched pair, and new systems use different refrigerants than older ones, so a new outdoor unit on an old coil loses efficiency and can void the manufacturer's warranty. Do you install ductless mini splits?Yes. Ductless systems suit homes without ducts, additions and single rooms the central system does not reach. Each indoor head is sized for its room.
